Find Me Mode
The iPhone is an incredibly amazing device. If you are anything like me then it is highly likely that every single time you leave your seat you check your pocket to see if your phone is there. However, you can throw all of these fears out of the window now with the introduction of a brand new device called the ‘Hipkey’. Let me explain a little bit about what this all about.
The latest incarnation of the Hipkey, manufactured by Hippih was shown off at CES 2013. Despite being a rather simple product it was greeted with a great deal of success. In fact, in December it was first listed on the European Online Apple Store and quickly sold out. This pushed the American launch to much later, and finally residents of the USA can look forward to it being launched on January 15th.
So what is the Hipkey? Well, many of us have probably downloaded an application from the Apple Store which allows us to keep track of our phones whenever we leave it behind. This product from Hippih takes that to the next level. It is a small aluminium device which attaches to the same chain as your key rings. Using a special application you will be able to pair up this low-powered device with your iPhone.
Within the application you will be able to set how far you can wander away from your iPhone with the Hipkey before alarm bells start ringing. You can start with a small distance of around 2-5 metres (ideal if you are travelling on public transport) or if you are at home or at work then you may wish to opt for a slightly longer distance such as 15-20 metres or even 30 to 50 metres. This of course means that you do not need to be carrying around the Hipkey constantly.
The software designed for the Hipkey isn’t just for keeping track of your iPhone however. There are a number of features included in the ‘free to download’ software designed for us with it. These are actually fairly useful:
- The Alarm mode is in place which will ring should somebody attempt to steal your iPhone or iPad, something which is becoming more and more common or if you simply leave it behind.
- Child Mode alerts you if your child wanders too far away from you.
- If you put the hipKey in your bag it will send out an alert should somebody move the bag.
- The ‘Find Me Mode’ allows you to find your iPhone, iPad or Keys should you misplace them.
The battery of the Hipkey is fairly low in power consumption and can last anywhere from two to four weeks. It can be completely recharged in four hours. At launch the device will be available on the Apple store for $89.99, the software will be completely free to download and activate on your device (although of course it is useless without the Hipkey)
my father in-law recently got a stunning green Ford Focus ST just
by some part-time working online with a laptop.
I love this idea! Just having it keep track of my phone sounds wonderful, but the child alert and theft feature take it over the top. I can see why it sold out in Europe so quickly.
This is brilliant! Hopefully this will become available for Android soon too. All I even care about is the theft-prevention aspect of it. The other features are cool, but not nearly as important to me.
This is something my nice needs. I am amazed at the places she has left her phone and I am even more amazed that as a bar manager, leaving it at work has yet to result in it being stolen. I am sure she would get some use from this.
This would be perfect for me! I'm definitely putting it on my Christmas list. I’ve already left my iPhone twice in two different stores. I’ve been lucky to have honest finders, but this would save me from losing it in the first place.
I would be most curious to find out if the "Find Me" app works in reverse. Could you find your Hipkey (and the keychain it’s on) using your iPad? Since I lose my keys all the time but rarely lose track of the iPad.
Thank you for this review, because I would not have had any idea what this gadget was for, and how it would benefit me. So, if anyone tries to steal my iPhone, or if I lose it, it will be easier to figure out where it is with this gadget. If your iPhone is important to you, this could be a beneficial item to have.
While this little gadget seems nifty enough, I don't consider it all that necessary. Instead of just delegating everything to a gadget, I think paying a little more attention to our surroundings would be more beneficial for most of us.
This is a pretty neat little gadget and will probably sell well, since no one likes to lose an expensive iPhone. I have one question, though. What happens when you lose the HipKey? Now you have two gadgets to make sure you keep track of instead of one.
The "Find Me Mode" on this little device is just
what I need! I am always misplacing my phone and it would be a disaster should
I ever lose it.
What a brilliant little device. I will be buying a few for friends with iPhones - it's going to be the perfect birthday or Christmas present. I know first hand how awful it is to lose your phone, having done it twice!
