Tips and Tricks for Using Siri

Tips and Tricks for Using Siri
Geeks Union

As our world enters a cyberpunk reality, certain aspects of life that were once stereotypical cliches are slowly developing into facets of day-to-day existence. One emerging example of this trend is the rising popularity of voice-activated features on mobile devices, most notably Siri, the option installed standard on all new iPhones. She is capable of doing numerous services for the user, though can get hung up on technical issues from time to time. Still, with the recent release of iOS 6, she is better than ever.

One of her most basic abilities is to perform web searches. Now, of course, she can use Google proficiently which is why it is the default search for any term she doesn’t understand. What some people might not know, however, is that she can search other websites as well. Adding a “search Wikipedia for” or “search YouTube for” before your query will have her jump straight to that website before performing the search, making it much simpler to find the article or video you are looking for than by merely going through Google.

Another shortcut she can make use of is assigning roles to your contacts. If you instruct Siri to call your brother, father, boss, girlfriend, or whatever, she will inform you that she doesn’t know who that is and give you the option of setting a role for the future. For someone with a plethora of contacts, this can make differentiating between your brother John, your co-worker John, and that John guy from the gym a much simpler task.

Siri makes use of the Wolfram Alpha database to supply a whole slew of information. This allows her to do basic, and even some complex, math, translate words and phrases, look up definitions, and consult various encyclopedias. She is also great at identifying plants and takes excellent notes. She can transcribe your speech to text in the default iPhone notepad and add a title to the note allowing for later additions and revision. Furthermore, she can write texts based on speech input and send them off on their way.

One of her newer features is the ability to launch applications. Limited in the initial release to stock apps such as the voice memo recorder and calendar, she will now open any app you have on your phone. Just summon her and say “launch Pandora” or “open Temple Run” and she will save you the hassle of menu navigation.

In a noisy room, it can be difficult to accurately communicate your intentions to Siri because she doesn’t always know when to quit listening. In these situations, speaking closely into the microphone and tapping the on-screen button when finished talking will help her to differentiate your vocals from the background noises. Always speak clear and slowly, though she can be surprisingly accurate at interpreting imperfect enunciations.

Although there is a virtual cornucopia of voice command features on mobile operating systems currently available, Apple’s Siri set landmarks with her early days and has only improved. While useful for basic things like setting alarms and appointments, with a little practice, she can make any user’s life a simpler ordeal.

When I was deciding on a phone to buy, Siri was one of the most attractive features of the new iPhone 5. I’ve used the application a couple of times and agree that this is a smart step into the right direction. I wasn’t even aware of the fact that I could assign roles to my contacts with Siri! That’s going to make life much easier for me!
