SlingMedia Slingbox 500 and SlingPlayer iOS App

SlingMedia Slingbox 500 and SlingPlayer iOS App

Attention Slingbox fans: The Slingbox 500 will be available on October 14th. With a sleek design and tons of great features, this new release promises to be at the top of every videophile’s holiday wish list.

In case you’re not familiar with the Slingbox, it’s one of the most versatile video streaming devices on the market. It allows users to watch video from their home cable or satellite provider anywhere there’s an internet connection. There are no monthly fees, and video is transmitted in full 1080p HD.

Like the Slingbox 350, which will also be released on the 14th, the 500 offers remote viewing on up to 4 screens, including desktops, laptops, smartphones and other connected devices. Additional features of the 500 model include built-in Wi-Fi, an easy to use TV interface, remote control unit, and the ability to view personal media remotely or on your television. It also comes with SlingSync, which will scan your drives for audio and video content, and SlingProjector, which makes it easy to watch video from sites such as YouTube on your TV.

Watching TV with your iPad or iPhone is as simple as downloading the SlingPlayer iOS app (iPhoneiPad App Store Link). For a one-time fee of just $14.99, you can stream live or recorded TV over any 3G, 4G or Wi-Fi connection to your heart’s content. You can even use your device to pause, fast-forward and rewind live TV and schedule recordings on your DVR. Apps are also available for Android, Windows Phone and Kindle Fire.

You don’t even need any special software to watch on your PC or laptop – just use your Internet Explorer, Firefox, Chrome or Safari web browser to log onto your account at Slingbox.com. You can also use the Slingbox for Facebook app to watch from your Facebook account with the option to share what you’re watching with your friends. It’s also possible to embed the SlingPlayer on your blog or website.

You can purchase the Slingbox 500 directly from Slingbox as soon as it becomes available. You’ll also be able to find it at popular retailers such as Sears, Frys, CompUSA and Amazon.

We have a cable TV subscription at the moment and while I like it okay, I would love having something like this so that I could fast forward through commercials and pause TV shows when I get up for another drink or a quick trip to the bathroom. I also like that projector feature it has that makes it easy to watch YouTube stuff on your TV.

This reminds me of the Roku somewhat, but it streams subscription TV instead of subscription apps like Netflix. Will it also stream those apps too, though? I will have to look into this; if price is on point I may very well buy one!
